ABOUT

German soprano Johanna Will was born in Munich and grew up in Dresden. Early instrumental lessons provided her entry into music, and at the age of 11 she began singing lessons at the Heinrich Schütz Konservatorium in Dresden. Several master classes with Professor Kurt Widmer (Basel) led to private studies with him beginning in 2012. Following her Abitur she studied Romance languages at the Technical Universität Dresden.

From 2015-2018 Johanna studied at the Hochschule für Musik und Theater Hamburg in the class of Professor Carolyn Grace James, where she earned her Bachelor of Music degree. Highlights of her studies in Hamburg include the role of the Hexe in Hänsel and Gretel and the soprano solo in Zemlinsky's Lyrische Symphonie with the Hamburger Symphoniker.

In 2018 a full scholarship to the Mannes School of Music brought Johanna to New York City. After completing her Master’s degree with Ruth Falcon (†2020), she extended her academic training under Professor Arthur Levy and was awarded a Professional Studies Diploma in Voice in 2022, each with highest distinction.

She currently works with Professor Gerald Martin Moore (Director of Yale Opera) and coaches with Kamal Khan (NYC). Master classes have contributed a great deal to Johanna’s development as a singer; among others she has worked with KS Brigitte Fassbaender, Magreet Honig, Klesie Kelly-Moog, Gerd Uecker and KS Franz Grundheber and was a scholar in the Summer Academy Mozarteum Salzburg, the International Master Classes Vaduz and the Junge Musiker Stiftung Bayreuth. Already in 2012 she was awarded the Rolex scholarship to attend the Georg Solti Te Kanawa Accademia di Bel Canto, where she worked with Angela Gheorghiu, Richard Bonynge and Dennis O'Neill.

Stage credits include Contessa (Le nozze di Figaro), Fiordiligi (Cosi fan tutte), Suor Angelica (Suor Angelica), Mimi (La Bohème), Tatyana (Eugene Onegin), Anninka (Brundibar, Hans Krásá) and Columbina (Die Feuersbrunst, J. Haydn). In 2009 Johanna played a bridesmaid in a cinema production of Hunter's Bride (Der Freischütz) alongside René Pape, Juliane Banse and KS Franz Grundheber.
In 2021 Johanna participated in the prestigious Merola Opera Program of the San Francisco Opera, including performance in Back Home: Through the Stage Door, which won the New York Film Award for the Best Musical Film. Johanna debuted as Tatyana in Eugene Onegin, directed by Peter Kazaras and conducted by Daniela Candillari, in Santa Barbara. She also had the pleasure of working there with renowned composer Tom Cipullo and joining the season's final concert under the baton of Speranza Scappucci. Johanna sang at the opening of the Viennese Opera Ball New York in 2022 and was invited to perform there again in 2024. In the summer of 2023 she was selected as a Young Artist to the Glimmerglass Festival (New York) and later that year appeared in Vaughan Williams's A Sea Symphony with the Heidelberg Philharmonic Orchestra and in Beethoven's 9th Symphony with the Santa Barbara Symphony Orchestra.
Another highlight was performing at NOSPR with the Polish National Radio Symphony Orchestra under the baton of Marin Alsop.
Johanna is excited to participate in the Ravinia Festival this summer. Also on the calendar for 2024 are appearances in China with the Ningbo Symphony Orchestra in September and October.
Johanna recently won the first prize of the Heartland Sings Vocal Competition in Indiana, where she also debuted with the Fort Wayne Philharmonic Orchestra.
Other grants and prizes in competitions include: first prize at both the Gustav Mahler Competition in Hamburg and the Elise Meyer Competition; second prize at the Houston Saengerbund competition, the Maritim Competition and the Mozart Competition in Hamburg; third prize in the Ningbo International Singing Competition China and the International Strauss Competition in Salzburg. In 2021 and 2022 Johanna was named a District Winner in the Metropolitan Opera Competition. The Gerda Lissner Foundation honored her with the Stephen De Maio Memorial Award in New York City in 2021, where she was also an award winner in their competition in 2022. Johanna is grateful for the support she received as a scholar from the Franz Wirth Memorial Foundation in Hamburg and the Da Ponte Foundation in Darmstadt.

Die Sopranistin Johanna Will wurde in München geboren und wuchs in Dresden auf. Schon früh fand sie im Instrumentalunterricht zur Musik, mit 11 Jahren nahm sie ersten Gesangsunterricht am Heinrich-Schütz-Konservatorium Dresden. In der Folge belegte sie zahlreiche Meisterkurse mit Prof. Kurt Widmer und begann 2012 ein Privatstudium bei ihm in Basel. Währenddessen belegte sie Romanistik an der TU Dresden.

2015-2018 absolvierte sie ein Bachelorstudium an der Hochschule für Musik und Theater Hamburg in der Klasse von Prof. Carolyn Grace James. Zu den Höhepunkten ihres Studiums dort zählen die Partie der Hexe in Hänsel und Gretel und das Sopransolo in Zemlinskys Lyrischer Symphonie mit den Hamburger Symphonikern. Ein Vollstipendium der Mannes School of Music erlaubte ihr anschließend ein Masterstudium bei Ruth Falcon († 2020) in New York City. Mit dem Professional Studies Diploma Voice bei Prof. Arthur Levy vollendete sie dort im Sommer 2022 ihre akademische Ausbildung, in deren Verlauf sie jeweils mit der Bestnote abschloss.

Einen großen Anteil an Johannas Entwicklung als Sängerin hatten Meisterkurse, die sie u.a. bei KS Brigitte Fassbaender, Magreet Honig, Klesie Kelly-Moog, Gerd Uecker und KS Franz Grundheber belegen konnte. Sie war Stipendiatin der Sommerakademie Mozarteum Salzburg, der Internationalen Meisterkurse Vaduz und der Jungen Musiker Stiftung Bayreuth. Bereits zuvor hatte sie das Rolex Stipendium zur Teilnahme an der „Georg Solti Te Kanawa Accademia di Bel Canto“ erhalten, wo sie mit Angela Gheorghiu, Richard Bonynge und Dennis O'Neill studieren konnte. Aktuell arbeitet sie mit Gerald Martin Moore und Kamal Khan.

Johannas Rollen umfassen unter anderem Fiordiligi (Cosi fan tutte), Mimi (La Bohème), Anninka (Brundibar, Hans Krásá) und Columbina (Die Feuersbrunst, J. Haydn). 2009 spielte sie in einer Kinoproduktion von Hunter's Bride (Der Freischütz) neben René Pape, Juliane Banse und KS Franz Grundheber eine Brautjungfer. Mit Mannes Opera in New York wurde sie in der Titelrolle in Puccinis Suor Angelica besetzt, in Le Nozze di Figaro sang sie die Rolle der Contessa.
2020/21 absolvierte sie das renommierte Merola Opera Program der San Francisco Opera. Dort wirkte sie unter anderem in dem Film Back Home: Through the Stage Door mit, der den New York Film Award als bester Musikfilm erhielt.

Im Sommer 2022 sang Johanna zur Eröffnung des Viennese Opera Ball New York und debütierte als Tatyana in Eugen Onegin in Santa Barbara bei der Music Academy of the West unter der Regie von Peter Kazaras und der Leitung von Daniela Candillari. Sie arbeitete dort ferner mit dem Komponisten Tom Cipullo und mit der Dirigentin Speranza Scappucci, um das Abschlusskonzert der Saison zu gestalten.
Auch in diesem Jahr freut Johanna sich, den Viennese Opera Ball New York eröffnen zu dürfen. Im Sommer ist sie als Young Artist zum Glimmerglass Festival (New York) eingeladen und wird dort unter anderem in La Bohème zu erleben sein. Später im Jahr wird sie mit dem Philharmonischen Orchester Heidelberg in Vaughan Williams A Sea Symphony zu hören sein, im Herbst in Beethovens 9. Symphonie mit dem Santa Barbara Symphony Orchestra.
Johanna Will erhielt wiederholt Stipendien und ist Preisträgerin internationaler Wettbewerbe. So gewann sie beim Gustav Mahler Wettbewerb Hamburg und beim Elise Meyer Wettbewerb jeweils den 1. Preis, beim Maritim Wettbewerb und beim Mozart Wettbewerb Hamburg den 2. Preis. In Salzburg belegte sie 2013 beim Internationalen Strauss Wettbewerb den 3. Platz. 2021 und 2022 war sie District Winner des Metropolitan Opera Wettbewerbs. Die Gerda Lissner Foundation verlieh ihr 2021 den Stephen De Maio Memorial Award in New York City, wo sie 2022 auch in deren Wettbewerb Preisträgerin wurde. Kürzlich belegte sie den 2. Platz beim Houston Saengerbund Award in Texas.
Johanna ist dankbar für Förderungen, die sie als Stipendiatin der Franz Wirth-Gedächtnis-Stiftung Hamburg und der Da Ponte Stiftung Darmstadt erhielt.
